LESSON 1 · Ecosystems: How Nature Balances
Economics of Conservation
Protecting rainforests means addressing the economic pressures that drive deforestation. A farmer who clears forest for cattle earns immediate income, while the climate and biodiversity value of standing forest pays that farmer nothing.
Payments for ecosystem services try to bridge this gap. Countries like Costa Rica pay landowners directly to keep forest standing, funded by carbon credits, water-use fees, and international conservation finance. After decades of these policies, Costa Rica reversed a long decline and saw its forest cover recover substantially.
Sustainable forestry, agroforestry, and non-timber forest products like Brazil nuts, rubber, and medicinal plants can earn more long-term income than clearing the land.
