LESSON 1 · Ecosystems: How Nature Balances

Indigenous Guardians

The most effective rainforest conservation is led by indigenous communities who have protected these ecosystems for millennia. Research shows indigenous-managed lands have lower deforestation and higher biodiversity than government-run protected areas.

Roughly 300 million people worldwide live in or near forests and depend on them. Their traditional ecological knowledge covers plant medicine, sustainable harvesting, and fire management developed over thousands of years.

Supporting indigenous land rights is one of the most cost-effective climate strategies available. Legal recognition protects forests at a fraction of conventional conservation costs while respecting human rights.
