Pteropods, the sea butterflies
Pteropods are pea-sized swimming snails that build delicate shells from calcium carbonate. As seawater turns more acidic, that mineral grows scarcer and their shells start to dissolve. Because they sit near the base of many food chains, weakening them ripples up to the fish and whales that feed on them.
