Drifting plant-like phytoplankton at the sea surface produce an estimated half of all the oxygen on Earth — more than every rainforest combined. One genus, Prochlorococcus, may be the single most abundant photosynthesizing organism on the planet, yet it was not discovered until the 1980s.
