LESSON 3 · Ecosystems: How Nature Balances
Desertification Threat
Desertification — the slow decline of dryland ecosystems into desert — threatens roughly one-third of the global land surface and directly affects over 250 million people. It is driven by overgrazing, deforestation, unsustainable irrigation, and climate change working together.

Desertification is not just an environmental problem. It is a security and migration issue. When agricultural land becomes desert, communities lose their livelihood. Competition for remaining arable land fuels conflict.
