LESSON 2 · The Extinction Crisis
Conservation funding follows a predictable bias: large mammals receive disproportionate attention compared to insects, amphibians, fungi, and plants. Pandas and whales dominate fundraising while thousands of critically endangered invertebrates go unnoticed.
Overlooked species are often more ecologically important. Insects pollinate crops, decompose waste, and form food chain bases. Amphibians control pests. Fungi enable most plant life through root partnerships and nutrient exchange.
A balanced approach protects entire ecosystems rather than individual charismatic species. When a forest is preserved for an iconic bird, every organism benefits — from soil microbes to canopy insects to the watershed downstream.
