LESSON 2 · The Extinction Crisis

Success Stories

Conservation works when it is funded and enforced. The bald eagle recovered from 417 breeding pairs in 1963 to over 300,000 individuals today after DDT was banned and habitat was protected. Humpback whales rebounded from near-extinction to healthy populations after commercial whaling was banned.

These successes share common elements: strong legal protection, habitat restoration, reduction of the primary threat, and sustained funding over decades. Quick fixes do not exist in species recovery. The bald eagle's recovery took over fifty years.
