LESSON 3 · The Extinction Crisis
Solutions That Scale
Addressing habitat loss requires systemic changes, not just protected areas. Agricultural intensification — producing more food on less land through sustainable methods — can ease the pressure to convert new habitat. Smart land-use planning can also map biodiversity corridors that connect protected areas so species can move between them.
Rewilding — letting degraded land return to a natural state — is gaining momentum in Europe and parts of the Americas. Abandoned farmland can regenerate into functional ecosystems within decades if seed sources survive nearby and grazing pressure is managed.
