LESSON 4 · The Extinction Crisis

What These Comebacks Teach Us

Every successful recovery shares three ingredients: legal protection to stop the bleeding, habitat restoration to give species room, and long-term funding that outlasts political cycles. Most species listed under the Endangered Species Act have avoided extinction — a survival record that makes it one of the most effective conservation laws ever.

The biggest takeaway? Extinction is not inevitable. When humans cause the decline, humans can engineer the recovery. These are blueprints, not miracles.
