Sorting machines literally can't see them
Recycling plants identify plastics by bouncing infrared light off each item. The carbon black pigment used to color trays and ready-meal containers absorbs that light instead of reflecting it, so the scanner reads nothing and the tray gets dumped with the rejects. Choosing clear or pale packaging gives your plastic a real shot at being recycled.
