LESSON 3 · Water: Earth's Scarcest Treasure

Why Whole Watersheds Matter

Protecting a single stretch of river is only half the job. The bigger lesson is that a clean river fed by a degraded watershed slowly fills with sediment, nutrients, and runoff anyway. Water needs protection across the entire basin — forests, headwaters, floodplains, and the groundwater beneath.

Quality counts as much as quantity. A river kept flowing but loaded with farm and factory pollution delivers far less benefit than one with real limits on what gets dumped upstream.
