Layers of Meaning

The lamb is one of Christianity's most densely coded images. The same animal carries several meanings at once:

  • Lamb of God — Christ, the sacrifice
  • Paschal lamb — the link back to the Jewish Passover
  • Innocence — the pure, faithful soul

That overlap was the whole appeal. A single painted lamb could whisper three ideas to a viewer in the same glance, with no words needed.
