LESSON 4 · Secrets Hidden in Masterpieces
Staging Domestic Power
Renaissance family portraits were staged productions. The arrangement of figures, the architecture, the clothing, and the lighting all sent messages about wealth, status, and who held power in the household.
The patriarch's position, size, and posture set up his authority in the scene. He usually held the dominant central spot — the place of honor — and often stood while others sat, drawing the eye straight to him. His wife and children arranged themselves to show their rank relative to him and to each other.
