"Johannes de Eyck was here, 1434"
Above the mirror, in elaborate script, Van Eyck painted the Latin line "Johannes de Eyck fuit hic" — "Jan van Eyck was here." It reads almost like graffiti, placing the painter himself inside the room as a witness to the scene rather than just its maker.
