LESSON 5 · Secrets Hidden in Masterpieces

A Gallery of Hidden Faces

Raphael populated The School of Athens with disguised portraits of the people around him. Plato wears the long beard and noble features of Leonardo da Vinci. The brooding Heraclitus, added late to the composition, carries Michelangelo's face — a nod to the rival then painting the Sistine ceiling in the same building.

Other identifications remain debated. Scholars still argue over whether Euclid is the architect Bramante and whether certain figures in the crowd portray specific members of the papal court. The fresco works as both philosophical allegory and Renaissance social register.
