Raphael's self-insertion carried a pointed message about the status of painters. In sixteenth-century Italy, a painter was treated as a craftsman — a manual laborer no different from a carpenter or a bricklayer. By standing among history's greatest philosophers, Raphael argued that painting deserved the same respect as the life of the mind.

The argument outlasted him. Partly through works like The School of Athens, later generations came to treat painting as a liberal art — a discipline of education and vision, not mere manual skill. The shy figure at the painting's edge helped reshape how the West understood artistic work.
