It is easy to read the swirling sky as pure breakdown. The truth is more careful. Van Gogh suffered severe episodes and was hospitalized, yet he also planned his paintings, mixed colors deliberately, and wrote clearly about what he was trying to do.
The swirls were not an accident of illness. They were a choice, made by an artist in control of his tools even when his mind was not always in control of itself.
