LESSON 4 · Art's Greatest Unsolved Mysteries
Creatures Beyond Reason
Bosch's hell panel is packed with monsters that seem pulled from fever dreams. A bird-headed demon on a throne swallows sinners and excretes them. A pair of giant ears wielding a knife rolls through the scene. Musical instruments become torture devices — a harp strings a body, a lute crushes another.

These aren't random nightmares. Many scholars believe Bosch drew from alchemical symbolism, Dutch proverbs, and popular folklore. The egg-shaped structures may reference alchemical vessels, and the bizarre hybrid creatures could satirize human vices through visual puns.
