The Recovery Project

Over the last few decades, scholars have been putting these women back into the record. It is slow detective work, not a single discovery.

Three tools do most of the heavy lifting:

  • Technical analysis of pigments and brushwork
  • Archival research through contracts and account books
  • Stylistic study comparing hands across paintings

Together they let researchers prove who actually held the brush — even when the label says otherwise.
