LESSON 1 · Art of the Ancient World
Painting Ancient Marble
Ancient Greeks painted their statues in vivid reds, blues, and golds that would shock anyone who grew up admiring pristine white marble in museums. They used a technique called polychromy, applying mineral pigments mixed with beeswax to create durable color layers.
The eyes received special attention. Sculptors inlaid them with glass, bone, and precious stones to create an eerily lifelike gaze. Bronze eyelashes were sometimes attached separately. Lips were painted deep red, hair was gilded or colored, and clothing received elaborate patterns.
Some statues even had metal accessories — bronze crowns, real jewelry, and weapons attached to outstretched hands.
