Roman workshops mass-produced statue bodies in standardized poses — the general in armor, the senator in a toga, the emperor as a god. Only the head was custom-carved, and even heads followed templates based on the current ruler's approved likeness.

Provincial cities received official portrait models from Rome, and local sculptors copied them with varying skill. This explains why some imperial portraits from distant provinces look slightly off — the carver had never actually seen the emperor. The system prioritized political messaging over artistic accuracy.
