The Epic of Gilgamesh, from Mesopotamia
Written in cuneiform on clay tablets, this long narrative poem follows a king who chases immortality and fails. It predates Homer by well over a thousand years, and its theme of a mortal ruler facing the gods echoes through later Greek myth and the Hebrew Bible. Older Sumerian writings survive, but as the earliest known epic it sits at the head of the storytelling tradition.
