LESSON 5 · Art of the Ancient World

When the Rules Broke

One pharaoh shattered the conventions. Akhenaten (ruled c. 1353-1336 BCE) ordered artists to abandon the idealized royal image, depicting him with an elongated skull, thick lips, wide hips, and a soft belly. Whether this captured his real appearance or made a theological statement is debated, but the break with three millennia of tradition was deliberate and shocking.

Akhenaten also introduced naturalistic scenes — he is shown kissing his children, holding his wife's hand, and relaxing in informal moments no earlier pharaoh would have permitted. After his death, the old style returned almost at once.
