LESSON 6 · Art of the Ancient World
The Body as Argument
To the Greeks, a balanced body was a balanced citizen. The relaxed, weight-shifted pose wasn't only about looking natural — it pictured a person in dynamic balance, neither stiff nor slumping.
That mattered in a city run by debate and self-control. A figure holding opposing forces in calm equilibrium was a quiet ad for the ideal Greek: composed, capable, in command of himself. The statue argued for a way of being human.
