A 36,000-Year-Old Gallery

The Chauvet Cave in southern France contains some of the oldest known paintings, dating back roughly 36,000 years. These aren't crude stick figures — they're sophisticated, dynamic depictions of lions, horses, and rhinoceroses rendered with confident, flowing lines that suggest years of artistic training.

The paintings at Chauvet used sophisticated techniques: shading, perspective, and animation effects where overlapping animal legs suggest movement. These artists understood visual storytelling at a level that wouldn't be matched for thousands of years.
