What Cave Art Means Today
The discovery of cave art forced a fundamental rethinking of human cognitive evolution. When Altamira's paintings were first shown in the 1880s, scholars dismissed them as a hoax, certain that prehistoric people lacked the mind for symbolic thought. Only decades later, after similar discoveries piled up, did experts accept them as genuine.
Those paintings proved that artistic intelligence is at least forty thousand years old — and recent finds keep pushing that date back. The impulse to create images isn't a lucky accident of one culture; it seems to belong to all of us.
