LESSON 1 · The Medieval Canvas

Medieval Art's Modern Legacy

Medieval aesthetics experienced a dramatic revival in the nineteenth century when the Pre-Raphaelites and Arts and Crafts movement rejected industrialization by returning to handcraft traditions. William Morris explicitly modeled his workshops on medieval guild practices, proving these methods still had practical value.

Contemporary artists continue drawing from medieval sources. Graphic novelists acknowledge medieval manuscripts as ancestors of the comic book — sequential images with text, decorative borders, and narrative pacing that feel remarkably modern. The illuminated page was essentially a multimedia experience centuries before screens existed.
