LESSON 2 · The Medieval Canvas

Byzantium's Golden Shadow

When Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in 1453, Byzantine artists scattered across Europe, carrying their techniques with them. Cretan painters trained in Byzantine workshops became some of the most sought-after artists in the Mediterranean, blending Eastern and Western styles into something new.

The most famous product of this migration was El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in Crete and trained in the icon tradition before moving to Venice and then Spain. His elongated figures, mystical lighting, and emotional intensity trace directly back to Byzantine prototypes.
