A painted dance led by skeletons that spared no one
After the plague, a strange genre spread across church walls: the danse macabre, or Dance of Death. Grinning skeletons led popes, kings, merchants, and peasants off in a line, hand in hand. The message was blunt: death takes everyone, no matter their rank.
