LESSON 5 · The Medieval Canvas
Constantinople's Living Museum
For centuries, Constantinople doubled as a vast open-air gallery of the classical past. The Hippodrome displayed looted masterpieces from across the Mediterranean — Greek bronzes, Egyptian obelisks, and Roman trophies arranged as a showcase of imperial conquest.
That treasure proved fragile. When Crusaders sacked the city in 1204, they melted down bronze sculptures that had survived since antiquity, destroying ancient art that no copy could replace.
