LESSON 6 · The Medieval Canvas

Infinite Knots

Celtic art never tried to copy the visible world. Instead, artists wove intricate knotwork patterns that loop endlessly without beginning or end. The Book of Kells, created around 800 CE and most likely begun by monks on the island of Iona, contains pages of such staggering complexity that a single decorated letter could take weeks to complete.

These patterns weren't mere decoration. The endless loops symbolized eternity and the interconnectedness of all life in Celtic theology. A knot without beginning or end represented a divine reality that existed beyond the linear human experience of time.
