Power Objects

The Kongo nkisi nkondi — a wooden figure bristling with nails and blades — is among the most striking art forms ever created. Each nail represents a specific oath, agreement, or curse activated by driving it into the figure. The object is simultaneously sculpture, legal document, and spiritual weapon.

These figures operated as community archives of binding agreements. When disputes arose, the relevant nail was identified and the original oath recalled. The sculpture functioned as a physical database of social contracts enforced by spiritual consequences.
