The Philosophy of Ink

Chinese ink painting is inseparable from Daoist and Buddhist philosophy. The concept of qi — vital energy flowing through all things — guides how a brush loaded with ink moves across silk or paper. A single stroke should capture not just how a bamboo leaf looks, but the living energy that makes it grow.

Training takes decades of disciplined practice. Students spend years copying master works before attempting original compositions, learning the rhythms through physical repetition rather than study. The brush must become an extension of the body, responding to impulse without conscious thought.
