LESSON 2 · Art Beyond Europe

Asia's Influence on Western Art

Asian art's impact on Western practice has been enormous but unevenly acknowledged. When Japanese woodblock prints reached Europe in the second half of the 1800s, they reshaped French painting. Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh studied ukiyo-e closely, adopting their flat color areas, unusual cropping, and high viewpoints — techniques that became central to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist composition.

The influence ran deeper than style. The Japanese idea of wabi-sabi — beauty in imperfection and transience — offered an alternative to the Western pursuit of permanence, inspiring work that valued process over polish.
