What Conquest Destroyed

Eyewitnesses described Aztec craftsmanship as surpassing anything in Europe, yet conquistadors valued it only as raw material or saw it as pagan idols to be destroyed.

The speed of the loss is hard to grasp. Symbolic systems, technical knowledge, and aesthetic principles refined over millennia were wiped out within a single generation — and unlike a looted object, that knowledge could never be recovered.
