The Unconscious Made Visible

The goal was to make the hidden mind visible. Painters built physical equivalents of automatic writing: dripping paint at random, pressing wet canvases together, or scraping textures off rough surfaces. None of it was planned. The accidents threw up unexpected shapes, and the artist then teased those shapes into a finished image.
