High Meets Low

Pop Art's fundamental provocation was treating commercial imagery as fine art material. Warhol's soup cans, Lichtenstein's comic panels, and Oldenburg's giant hamburgers took images from the lowest rungs of cultural hierarchy and displayed them in the most prestigious spaces the art world could offer.

This gesture challenged assumptions that had governed Western art since the Renaissance — that serious art required noble subjects and elevated technique. Pop artists used commercial printing methods, factory production, and mass-media source material to create works that were deliberately indistinguishable from the consumer culture they depicted.
