Perspective Changes Everything
Linear perspective gave painters a mathematical system for creating the illusion of depth on a flat surface. For the first time, artists could construct convincing three-dimensional spaces using geometry rather than guesswork.
Masaccio was the first to fully exploit it. The architectural space in his Trinity fresco recedes with such precision that it reads as a real chapel carved into the wall — an illusion that still works six centuries later.
