St. Peter's Basilica in Rome
Designed principally by Bramante, Michelangelo, and Maderno over more than a century (1506-1626), St. Peter's combines Renaissance symmetry with Baroque drama. Bernini added the piazza, colonnade, and baldachin, and his sweeping colonnade embraces the square like outstretched arms, making architecture feel emotional.
