LESSON 2 · Baroque: Drama in Paint
Light Against Darkness
Baroque painting is defined by the dramatic collision of light and shadow — a technique called chiaroscuro pushed to theatrical extremes. Caravaggio pioneered the approach, illuminating his figures with a single harsh spotlight that carved faces and hands out of near-total darkness, creating scenes that felt like nocturnal encounters.

The technique served theological purposes. In Catholic Counter-Reformation art, divine light piercing darkness represented God's grace breaking into a fallen world. Every illuminated saint, every glowing face emerged from shadow as evidence of spiritual salvation.
