Baroque's Emotional Arsenal

Baroque painters had a toolkit built to overwhelm. Dramatic foreshortening made figures seem to burst out of the picture plane, and diagonal compositions replaced Renaissance calm with restless movement and energy.

These choices served the Counter-Reformation directly. Catholic leaders needed art that could compete with Protestant preaching for converts' hearts — religious experiences so visceral they bypassed intellectual doubt entirely.
