LESSON 1 · From Excess to Order: Rococo & Neoclassicism
Rococo's Afterlife
Rococo fell hard when the French Revolution made aristocratic frivolity politically dangerous. Revolutionary artists replaced pastel fantasies with Neoclassical severity. But Rococo's DNA survived in decorative arts, fashion, and interior design. Art Nouveau, with its organic curves and ornamental excess, is Rococo's direct descendant.

Contemporary designers still draw from Rococo's visual vocabulary — its emphasis on asymmetry, organic curves, and surface decoration reappears in everything from luxury branding to digital interfaces that prioritize elegance over austerity.
