The Uncomfortable Truth
Tying classical columns to political legitimacy created some awkward contradictions. Slave-owning American founders built Greek temples to house democratic institutions while denying democracy to most of the population.
The same style of authority appealed to tyrants, too. Mussolini and Hitler both adopted Neoclassical architecture for their monumental building programs — proof that classical grandeur could serve oppression as easily as it served freedom.
