Turner is said to have lashed himself to a ship's mast
By his own later account, **J.M.W. Turner** had himself tied to a mast during a storm to study it from inside — a story he may have embellished. The painting it inspired, *Snow Storm* (1842), dissolved solid form into swirling chaos, prefiguring abstract art by a century.
