LESSON 1 · Capturing Reality
The Revolution of the Ordinary
Realism changed what art was allowed to notice, and the shift stuck:
- It treated everyday people as fit subjects for a serious canvas
- The Russian Peredvizhniki carried art to the public through traveling exhibitions
- It opened the door for Impressionism, Social Realism, and documentary photography
- It widened the idea of beauty to include the unglamorous and the everyday
Before Realism, art looked up — at gods, kings, and ideals. Realism looked around, at the people living and working in the same world as the artist. That one change in direction shaped everything that came after.
