Dots and System

Georges Seurat (1859-1891) pushed Impressionist color theory to its logical extreme with Pointillism — tiny dots of pure color placed by the rules of scientific color theory. In his A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1886), every dot was calculated, not spontaneous. The eye, not the brush, does the mixing.

Seurat died at 31, leaving a small body of work that proved art could be both rigorously systematic and visually enchanting. His method influenced Op Art, digital pixel art, and any artist who treats the canvas as a field of discrete units rather than continuous strokes.
