Writing in Light

In Eastern Orthodox tradition, icons are not "painted" — they are "written" (the Greek word graphein means both). This isn't just linguistic tradition; it reflects the belief that an icon is a theological statement expressed visually, equivalent to a written passage of scripture. The icon painter (iconographer) is a theologian working in pigment.

Icon painters followed strict theological guidelines inherited from centuries of tradition. Innovation was discouraged because the icon's power came from its connection to sacred prototypes, not from the painter's individual creativity.
