LESSON 3 · Sacred Art Across Cultures

Calligraphy as Supreme Art

In Islamic tradition, calligraphy ranks above painting, sculpture, and architecture, because it carries the literal word of God as revealed in the Quran. The calligrapher doesn't just write text — he gives physical form to divine speech, which makes the act itself sacred.

Mastery took decades of training. The great Ottoman calligrapher Sheikh Hamdullah reportedly copied the entire Quran more than forty times, each copy treated as an act of devotion as much as a feat of skill.
