Atticus Under Scrutiny

For decades, Atticus Finch was American literature's moral ideal — the perfect father, the principled lawyer, the embodiment of courage. Harper Lee's 2015 publication of Go Set a Watchman, a draft written before Mockingbird, depicted an older Atticus attending a segregationist citizens' council meeting, shocking readers worldwide.

Some scholars argue Watchman reveals what was always implicit: Atticus in Mockingbird is a moderate white Southerner who works within the system rather than challenging it. He takes Tom's case because the court assigns it, not because he seeks racial justice. This reassessment does not destroy the novel's power but adds complexity — asking whether incremental decency within an unjust system is courage or complicity.
