The Phoniness Problem

Holden correctly identifies real hypocrisy everywhere he looks — the headmaster who performs differently for wealthy parents, actors who abandon sincerity for applause, adults who say things they do not mean. His perceptiveness is genuine and often devastatingly accurate.

Salinger demonstrates that seeing through everything is not the same as understanding anything. Holden can diagnose the world's problems but cannot solve his own. His clarity about others masks a profound inability to examine his own motivations and grief.
